The Elliott Theater at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center on August 28 by Playhouse 22.
Elliott was a well-respected teacher at East Brunswick High School and one of the founding members of the East Brunswick Community Players. He also founded and for 50 years served as director of the East Brunswick Children’s Summer Theater Program.
He was the subject of a documentary film and authored and produced several off-Broadway musicals.
Amongst Elliott’s pupils are numerous successful artists, including an Emmy Award winner, a Grammy Award winner, and a Tony-nominated lyricist.
Playhouse 22 is a community theater managed entirely by volunteers and situated in Central Jersey. The Player was their theater “nomads” for more than 60 years, traveling across the area and putting on performances wherever there was a room available. They started more than 60 years ago as the East Brunswick Community Players.
The Players moved into their first residence, “Playhouse 22,” 22 years after its inception, thanks to a collaboration with the Township of East Brunswick. The original Playhouse 22 was a combination of a nearly century-old schoolhouse, a disused public works garage, and a trailer that served as its home until 2005.
Early in the new millennium, the Township contacted the Playhouse 22 board again with the offer to leave the theater to move into a brand-new, cutting-edge Community Arts Center being built nearby. It was agreed that the troupe was going after many meetings and debates.
The Players finally relocated into the Arts Center in the autumn of 2009 after “Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple: Female Version” premiered in September 2009, after a longer than anticipated wait. From plays like Death of a Salesman, Noises Off, and Rumors to our mainstage musicals like Into the Woods, The Producers, and 1776, Playhouse 22 has grown into a center for all theatrical genres since its debut in 2009. Since 1994, Playhouse 22 has also presented a unique rendition of A Christmas Carol.
Additionally, Playhouse 22 hosts many unique events throughout the year, including their renowned “Third Thursday Play Reading” series, which gives regional writers the chance to perform their works in front of a live audience—often for the first time. Live music performances, our well-liked two-day theater festival, and kid-friendly activities are among the other unique events.
Children aged 7 to 13 get the chance to learn about the world of theater via Playhouse 22’s Summer Theater Experience, which includes everything from performing to dancing to creating lighting and set elements. Additionally, Playhouse 22 collaborates with Creative Communicators, a neighborhood group that offers theatrical lessons to kids with special needs.
The New Jersey Association of Community Theaters has long honored Playhouse 22’s excellence in local theater. They named the theater “Community Theater of the Year” in 2000, and Playhouse 22 has won and been nominated for many prizes in various categories, from outstanding stage performances to excellent technical design. Playhouse 22’s production of 1776 was named “Best Musical of the Year” in 2016.
The East Brunswick Community Arts Center, was renamed in 2018 in honor of the group’s founding father in collaboration with the Township of East Brunswick.
Mission
To promote live theater’s educational and social benefits, foster involvement in the theater arts, and create a community cultural hub for the performing arts.
Safety
Visitors are asked to research this website and abide by the following rules before attending a performance:
Their rules have been developed in accordance with the policies of the Township of East Brunswick and the State of New Jersey. The well-being and safety of both our volunteers and visitors come first, and they have a no-excuse policy in place.
When watching a Playhouse 22 show, all visitors must have the proper facial protection. While actively eating or drinking, face coverings may be taken off.
According to recommendations from government organizations, every member of the cast, crew, and Playhouse 22 volunteers will need to be completely immunized.
You choose the least interaction method of presenting your tickets at the door. Make sure to choose the mobile ticketing option when ordering tickets online. A will-call table will be made available upon request for individuals who cannot utilize the mobile option or print their tickets.
Only pre-packaged products like candy, soda, and water will be available for purchase from our restricted concessions. Sadly, they are currently without coffee or tea.
The building’s doors will open for visitors simultaneously as the auditorium doors will open for seats. Additionally, when the act is over, guests must vacate the premises.
According to local, state, and federal regulations, Playhouse 22 sells all available tickets. However, if the performance has to be rescheduled to comply with new rules, they will let you know your alternatives.
Instead of selling season passes, individual performance tickets are available for purchase. They provide complimentary access to unique events all season long for their devoted subscribers. Only 2019–2020 season subscribers are eligible for this promotion.
At Playhouse 22, the comfort and safety of visitors, performers, and volunteers come first. They shall take whatever actions are required to bring about a swift resolution if they ever believe that someone’s safety or wellbeing is in danger.
The foundation of Playhouse 22 has always been generous contributions. They have been fortunate that contributions from many of you have enabled us to provide live theater at a reasonable price through some of the most trying periods. No doubt, the times they live in are similar. From March 2020 until they resumed with “Harvey” in October 2021, they could not offer any live, in-person shows because of the epidemic.
Many notable artists have been among Elliott’s pupils, including an Emmy Award winner, a Grammy Award winner, and a Tony Award-nominated lyricist. For more information, you may visit their website or call them at 732-254-3939. Read more.
